CHAPTER XIV â A TOUCH OF JEALOUSY
When Persephone woke, she was aware of two things: one, she was in a strangerâs bed, and two, she was naked. She sat up, holding black silk sheets to her chest. She was in Hades room. She recognized it from the day sheâd fallen into the Styx and heâd healed her.
She found Hades sitting before his blazing fireplace. It was probably the most god-like sheâd ever seen him. He looked perfectly untouchedânot a hair out of place, not a wrinkle in his jacket, not a button undone. He held his whisky in one hand, and the fingers of his other hand rested upon his lips. The halo of fire roaring behind him also seemed fitting, as it raged like his eyes.
It was how she knew that though he appeared to be reclining, he was wound tight.
He kept her gaze, not speaking, and took a sip of his drink.
âWhy am I naked?â Persephone asked.
âBecause you insisted on it,â he answered in a voice void of the barely-restrained desire heâd exhibited in the limo. She didnât have many memories from last night, but she was sure sheâd never forget the press of Hadesâ fingers into her thighs, or the delicious friction that sent shockwaves through her body. âYou were very determined to seduce me.â
Persephone blushed fiercely, embarrassed. She looked away when she asked, âDid weââ
Hades laughed darkly. Persephone clenched her teeth so hard, her jaw hurt. Why was he laughing? âNo, Lady Persephone. Trust me, when we fuck, youâll remember.â
When? âYour arrogance is alarming.â
His eyes flashed. âIs that a challenge?â
âJust tell me what happened, Hades!â She demanded.
âYou were drugged at La Rose. Youâre lucky you are immortal. Your body burned through the poison fast.â
Not fast enough to prevent embarrassment, apparently.
She remembered a waitress approaching once theyâd hit the dance floor. She brought them drinks, said they were on the house. Soon after sheâd consumed it and started to dance, the music had sounded far away, the lights were blinding, and every move she made sent her head spinning.
She also remembered hands on her body and cold lips closing over hers.
âAdonis,â Persephone said. Hades jaw tightened at hearing the mortalâs name. âWhat did you do to him?â
Hades looked at his glass, swirling the whisky before downing the last bit. Once he finished, he sat the glass aside, not looking at her.
âHe is alive, but that is only because he was in his goddessâs territory,â he answered.
âYou knew!â Persephone accused, she pushed off the bed, and stood. Hadesâ silk sheets rustled around her. His penetrating gaze drifted from her face down, tracing every line of her body. She felt as if she were standing bare before him.
âIs that why you warned me to stay away from him?â
âI assure you there are more reasons to stay away from that mortal than the favor Aphrodite has bestowed upon him.â
âLike what? You cannot expect me to understand if you donât explain anything.â Sheâd taken a step toward him, even though some part of her knew it was dangerous.
